Imo State postpones resumption of schools

The Imo State Government has postponed the resumption of schools in the state until January 25, due to the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic, stating that the January 25th resumption date is not certain, and subject to review.

According to a statement released by the state’s Commissioner for Education, Prof. Bernard Ikegwuoha, on Monday, January 18, in Owerri, said the postponement was as a result of the rising cases of COVID-19 in the urban areas of Owerri West, North, and the Owerri Municipal Local Government Areas.

The commissioner maintained that schools can only reopen when all COVID-19 protocols are compulsorily observed, with a monitoring team in place to ensure compliance.

He warned that defaulters would be sanctioned accordingly and urged proprietors and principals of schools to be on red alert.

Imo University Status Reversed to Polytechnic, New Rector Appointed

Governor of Imo State, Emeka Ihedioha has reversed the status of the newly converted Imo State University of Agriculture and Technology, Umuagwo, to its earlier polytechnic status. The immediate past governor of the state, Rochas Okorocha, at the end of his administration elevated the polytechnic to a university status and appointed a Vice Chancellor.

However, in a statement issued by the Secretary to the state government, Uche Onyeagucha on Monday, the governor reversed the institution to its original status and ordered for the reopening at its initial location. Ihedioha then appointed an acting rector, following the retirement of Wance Madu.
