EBSU set to embark on strike as meeting with Gov. Umahi ends in deadlock

The Ebonyi state chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), is on the verge of embarking on strike after a meeting between the union and the state governor, David Umahi ended on a deadlock.

The meeting which held on Tuesday, 19 January at Government House, Abakaliki, had in attendance ASUU delegation, led by its National Vice Chairman, Academics, Emmanuel Osodeke, and the chairman of the (EBSU) chapter of ASUU, Ikechukwu Igwenyi, among others.

According to Osodeke, his intentions of intervening in the dispute were unsuccessful as Governor Umahi instead of focusing on the issues, decided to engage in a war of words with Ikechukwu, the Chairman of EBSU chapter of ASUU.

Mr. Osodeke said the delegation will meet with the lecturers on Wednesday, before the union at the national level decides on what to do next.

This is to inform the public and new students of the Ebonyi State University (EBSU) that the university has announced the date for the 22nd matriculation ceremony of the institution. Students and the public are hereby informed that the ceremony will hold as follows:

All first-year students who have completed their registration and received their registration numbers should go to their faculty officers to obtain their matriculation materials.

EBSU notice to students on commencement of lectures and matriculation

This is to inform the Students, Parents and the General Public of the Ebonyi State University that the school has resumed and lectures commenced. Students who have not returned to school are advised to do so to retain their student status. 

Furthermore, matriculation of fresh students for the 2019/2020 session will hold on 14th November 2020 at the four annexes of the University by 10:00 am prompt. Those who have not paid their school fees should do so before matriculation.

1. All students are expected to pay their school fees as required by the University if they have not done so.

2. The candidates are to collect the necessary matriculation materials from their various faculties.

Ebonyi State Reduces Tuition for Varsity Students

The Ebonyi State government has reduced the tuition of indigenes and non-indigenes students of the Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Abakaliki. The fees were slashed by N20, 000 and N10, 000 respectively for the 2020/2021 academic session.

The Secretary to the State Government, Dr Kenneth Ugbala announced this on behalf of the state Governor, David Umahi via the Ebonyi State Broadcasting Corporation on Monday.

The Governor maintained that the move was to cushion the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the EndSARS protests on students and their parents.

No Governor Can Proscribe Union Activities – EBSU ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ebonyi State University (EBSU) Chapter has remarked that no Governor can proscribe the union because it is a registered body and operates under a charter.

Chairman of the Union Chapter, Dr Ikechukwu Igwenyi made this statement on Sunday in the state capital. He stressed that labour issues such as the demands being made by the union belong to the exclusive list category.

Recall that the state Governor, David Umahi had proscribed the activities of ASUU, NASU and other bodies in the institution.

The union chairman, who maintained that EBSU ASUU is a branch of the national body, said that ASUU was aware of the current situation in the institution.

Dr Igwenyi alleged that the university workers are being owed four months salaries and encouraged them to remain resolute until their demands are met by the government.

He further called on the state government to improve university education in the state by giving more priority to the sector.
