Skype is a popular software application currently developed by Microsoft that is mainly used for Instant Messaging and for Audio and Video calls and Video conferencing call. Among these functions, Skype can also be used for file sharing, screen sharing and text and voice messaging.

In this guide we’ll cover the process of installing the latest version of Skype (8.13) in CentOS, RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux) and Fedora distributions.

In order to install Skype in your Linux distribution, first visit Skype official download page at and download the latest available version of the software for Linux in your system by following the download link from browser or use open a Terminal window and grab the package via wget command line utility.

- wget https://go.skype.com/skypeforlinux-64.rpm

After the download completes, proceed with Skype installation process, by opening a console and issue the following command with root privileges, specific for the installed Linux distribution in your machine.

- yum localinstall skypeforlinux-64.rpm  [On CentOS/RHEL]
- dnf install skypeforlinux-64.rpm       [On Fedora 24-27]

Update: On Fedora, you can install Skype from snap tool as shown.

$ sudo dnf install snapd
$ sudo ln -s /var/lib/snapd/snap /snap
$ sudo snap install skype --classic

After the installation process completes, start Skype application by navigating to Application Menu -> Internet -> Skype.

In many Linux distributions Thunderbird package included by default, and can be installed using the default package management system, because it will:

  1. Ensure that you have all the needed libraries

  3. Make Thunderbird accessible to all system users on your computer
  4. It may not offer you the latest version of Thunderbird

Install Thunderbird Email Client in Linux

To install Thunderbird from the default system repositories issue:

$ sudo apt-get install thunderbird   [On Ubuntu based systems]
$ dnf install thunderbird            [On Fedora based systems]

As I said, installing from default repositories will give you older version of Thunderbird. If you want to install most recent version of Mozilla Thunderbird, you can use the PPA maintained by the Mozilla team.

Use CTRL + ALT + T from the desktop to open terminal and add the Thunderbird repository under Ubuntu and its derivatives.

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-security/ppa

Next, update the system software packages using update command.

$ sudo apt-get update

Once you’ve updated the system, install it using the following command.

$ sudo apt-get install thunderbird

What is PlayOnLinux?

PlayOnLinux (POL) is an open source gaming framework (software) based on Wine, that allows you to easily install any Windows based applications and games on Linux operating systems, via the use of Wine as front-end interface.

What are PlayOnLinux’s features?

How to Install PlayOnLinux in Linux Distributions

PlayOnLinux is in Fedora’s software repositories, so you can add the repository and install the PlayonLinux software using the following commands.

For RHEL/CentOS/Fedora

How do I Start PlayOnLinux

Once it’s installed, you can start the PlayOnLinux as normal user from the application menu or use the following command to start it.

Installing Apache, MySQL and PHP

To install “PointSMS” portal, you must have Apache, MySQL, PHP and Wget packages installed on your system. So, install them using the following yum command. Copy and Paste the whole command in a terminal.

- yum -y install httpd httpd-devel mysql mysql-server php-mysql php-gd php-imap php-ldap php-mbstring php-odbc php-pear php-xml php-xmlrpc wget

Once you’ve installed all the above packages, then create a system start-up links for Apache and MySQL. So, whenever a system boots, these services start automatically.

- chkconfig --levels 235 httpd on 
- chkconfig --levels 235 mysqld on

Type the following commands to start the both services as shown below.

- /etc/init.d/httpd start
- /etc/init.d/mysqld start

Installing PointSMS Portal

Go to the Apache website root directory (i.e. /var/www/html) and download the “PointSMS” package using wget command. Once downloaded extract the files with the help of tar command.

- cd /var/www/html
- wget http://www.pointsms.org/downloads/pointsms_1.0.1_beta.tar 
- tar -xvf pointsms_1.0.1_beta.tar

Now we need to create a “pointsms” database. So, connect to your MySQL server and create the database by running the following commands.

- mysql -u root -p
- create database pointsms;
- exit;

Next, import the “pointsms.sql” file to the newly created “pointsms” database.

- cd /var/www/html
- mysql -u root -p pointsms  DB/pointsms.sql

Open the following file with your choice of editor and change the database settings as shown below.

- vi includes/config.php

$dbhost = 'localhost';
$dbuser = 'root';
$dbpass = 'password';
$dbname = 'pointsms';

Setup a cronjob for “cron.php” to run every minute and add the correct installation path.

- crontab -e

Next, rename htaccess to .htaccess.

- mv htaccess .htaccess

Now, we need to enable mod_rewrite module in Apache. So, open the configuration file.

- vi /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf

And Change “AllowOverride None“.

Run the following command to restart the Apache, to reflect new changes.

To compose a sms. Go to SMS –> Compose SMS and enter the details of the recipients as shown below. Right now you can able to send single sms. To send more sms, you must have “Credits” in your Account.
